This Privacy Policy explains how Bunkie (“we,” “us,” “our”) collects, uses, stores, and protects personal data when you apply for or use our roommate-matching service. Bunkie is committed to handling your data in accordance with the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 (“NDPA”).

We collect the following categories of personal data:

• Identity information: full name, government-issued ID (e.g. NIN slip or national ID), and a live selfie for verification purposes.
• Guarantor information: your guarantor’s name, relationship to you, and phone number.
• Application information: school, level of study, gender, phone number, email, budget, location, and your stated lifestyle preferences and habits (sleep schedule, cleanliness, noise tolerance, guest habits, and similar details).
• Communication data: messages exchanged with Bunkie via WhatsApp or other channels during verification, matching, or support.
• Payment information: transaction records related to the ₦20,000 introduction fee, processed through a third-party payment provider (Bunkie does not directly store your card or bank details).

We use your data to:

• Verify your identity and guarantor before any match is made
• Match you with compatible roommates based on your stated preferences
• Communicate with you about your application, matches, and account
• Investigate and respond to safety concerns or red-flag reports
• Process payment for the introduction fee
• Improve our matching process and track outcomes (e.g. match survival rates)
• Comply with legal obligations, including under the NDPA

We process your data on the basis of your consent, given when you accept these terms and submit your application. You may withdraw consent at any time, though this may limit or end your ability to use Bunkie’s services.

• Your guarantor is contacted directly to confirm their relationship with you.
• A matched user receives your shortlist information (school, budget range, lifestyle summary, compatibility notes) before payment, and your name and contact details after a paid introduction is unlocked.
• Payment processors via direct bank transfers receive transaction information necessary to process the introduction fee.
• We do not sell your personal data to third parties.
• We may disclose data where required by law or to protect the safety of a user.

• Identity documents and selfies are retained only as long as necessary to complete verification, and are archived or deleted once a decision has been made on your application, unless retention is required for an active dispute or legal obligation.
• Application and matching data is retained for as long as your account is active, and for a reasonable period afterward to support safety records (including the internal red-flag log) and business records.

We take reasonable organizational and technical steps to protect your data against unauthorized access, loss, or misuse, consistent with NDPA requirements. This includes limiting access to identity documents to those directly involved in verification, and using secured storage and communication channels wherever possible.

Under the NDPA, you have the right to:

• Access the personal data we hold about you
• Request correction of inaccurate data
• Request deletion of your data, subject to legal or safety-related retention needs
• Withdraw consent to processing at any time
• Lodge a complaint with the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) if you believe your data has been mishandled

Bunkie’s services are intended for students (Undergraduate, Master’s, PhD, and NYSC-adjacent). We do not knowingly collect data from anyone below the eligibility criteria for our service.

Some of the tools we use (such as WhatsApp, Google Forms, and payment processors) may store or process data on servers located outside Nigeria. Where this occurs, we take reasonable steps to ensure your data continues to receive an appropriate level of protection.

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Continued use of Bunkie after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
